MOJ BAH – COLOURS LIKE MEMORIES (VIDEO/phOTO INSTALLATIon)
Bushehr Province (Persian: استان بوشهر, Ostān-e Būshehr ) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. It is in the south of the country, with a long coastline onto the Persian Gulf and Some years ago, Moj Bah was invited by a friend from his period of military service to one of the smallest and most isolated villages of Bushehr. During his time there he made several photo series and, through his friendship with a young man from the village, was fortunate enough to gain access to the photo albums of local families. In the albums he found a treasure trove of images, showing daily life of the people during the Iran/Iraq war in the 1980s, along with an incredible feeling of recognition. The scenes depicted in the family keepsakes of strangers transported him back to his own childhood - Moj himself having being born during the conflict. The photos opened a window onto everyday life during the war – a perfect reminder of how people keep living with hope in hopeless moments.
With help from the locals, Moj scanned more than two thousand of the pictures from the albums. The installation brings these fragile pieces together as a collection of strange but familiar memories, to provide a transient impression of what it felt like to be a child during war time, and how joy of life and hope wins over obscurity.
WALT VAN BEEK (VIDEO / PRINTS)
From spring 2016 onwards, visual artist Walt Van Beek (1981 - Antwerp) worked in Berlin on a personal research about his recently deceased mother. In the 60ies his mother lived in West Berlin. During his residence at Air Berlin Alexanderplatz Walt traced her steps, talked with her fiends and visited the places where they mostly hung around.
His mother also introduced the city to Van Beek as a teenager, which triggered his love for skating. In Air Berlin Alexanderplatz Walt explored the cross-fertilization between these two worlds.
Walt Van Beek starts from the reflections and experiences he gained in Berlin to work with the findings of this personal research in his own hometown, Brussels.
Sheroké (1986 - former West-Berlin), is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Amsterdam. Her earliest works as a painter focused on synesthesia, the fusion of sound and colors, a fascination that should become a Leitmotiv in her work. While pursuing her studies in Amsterdam, New York and Paris and working in film, Sheroké eventually explored visual art as a VJ in night clubs, cabaret, theatre and concerts, collaborating with different artists such as the cabaret duo Matroesjka (Amsterdam Fringe Festival, 2013) and the Dutch Hip Hop artist Adje (Melkweg, Amsterdam, 2015). Her live visuals follow a poetic, surreal and sometimes nostalgic narrative. Since 2011 Sheroké has continued to probe the central themes of belonging and longing, connection and disconnect through music videos and short films.
For the artist, Fernweh, this edition’s theme of the BANG!festival is therefore close to home, as it depicts a concept which is inevitably linked to her identity as a European citizen with Kurdish roots. In fact roots, that cannot be traced back to an existing country on the world map, making Fernweh a strong notion paradoxically substituting the idea of Heimweh. Sheroké’s video installation for BANG! explores the restlessness of a child of first generation immigrants in Europe, growing up tri-culturally and with Fernweh as a life-long companion, rather than a temporary state of mind.
JULIE DE CLERCQ – DE BUNKER (VIDEO INSTALLATIon)
(c) JULIE DE CLERCQ
Visualisation of a description of « peace ». By adding a sound element at the end of the film the border between non-fiction and fiction erases to show a clear point of view : peace is a volatile concept.
BART VAN NUYS – INSTALLATIon – ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
(c) BART VAN NUYS
Bart Van Nuys (Roermond, Nl, 1971) lives and works in Antwerp and depicts everyday objects (acrylic on canvas), which he places in different environments. After he has photographed a piece of work in relation to its surrounding, Van Nuys removes it again. After this actual journey, the work ultimately becomes a kind of souvenir, with the moment of installation as a one-man performance.
Placing the series of houses in an exhibition also feels a bit like moving. The whole process shows us some parallels to actual migration. The urge for the unknown, with the known, as weight, (literally) on your back. Moreover, the size and shape of the work concerns a confrontation with the new surroundings, with different outcomes as a result.
